The Program in Latin American Studies at The Johns Hopkins University offers a 6-week Summer Program in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The program combines one course on History and Culture and one course on environmental policies. The courses will be complemented by several field trips around Rio de Janeiro. This program will be offered through the Universidade Federal Rural de Rio de Janeiro. Students will attend classes specifically offered by distinguished faculty for participants and will live with Brazilian families. The Summer Program in Argentina offers two courses for credit. 3 credits. The course offers a wide portrait of Brazilian socio-political formation from the colonial period till contemporary times, addressing also issues of race, national identity and popular culture. 3 credits. The course offers an insight into major environmental problems, referring to forests and biodiversity (green), local and global pollution problems (grey) and water and oceans (blue) and anlyzes the global warming problem. Classes meet twice a week for 3 hours each course and are also complemented by language instruction classes. The program also contemplate 3 excursions to locations of interest of the courses and not far from Rio de Janeiro and guest lectures. A minimum of 2 years of Portuguese courses at the college level is strongly recommended. Students must apply to be enrolled in the Program and must fulfill the following requirements:
Good academic standing. Valid passport and visa. Participants will sign a Release and Waiver of Liability and will be responsible for their own health insurance or other provisions. The program cost is $6,400 and varies according to the final number of participants. The cost includes instruction, room & board, field trips, and a round trip ticket from A US port (maybe Miami or New York) to Rio e Janeiro. Accepted students will hold their place by paying a non-refundable advance of $1000.00 by April 4, 2008. Deadline for total payment is TBA. All checks must be payable to The Johns Hopkins University.
