My interests are in social transformations in the unifying German nation-state and using ethnography to investigate how the everyday practices of small-scale community organizations reflect regional interests. Specifically, I am interested in the local-level negotiation and ongoing effects of the dramatic social and economic changes since 1990 that have swept over the postsocialist region of eastern Germany (the Neue Laender). In future fieldwork I will address such issues as: the extent to which eastern-ness or eastern identity acts as an organizing rubric at the level of local communities; and how the joining of two formerly opposing German states has shaped the understanding of "nation" and individuals' personal histories within it.
